Puerto Maldonado is a city in Southeastern Peru in the Amazon rainforest 55 kilometres (34 mi) west of the Bolivian border; located at the confluence of the Tambopata and Madre de Dios rivers, the latter of which joins the Madeira River as a tributary of the Amazon. It is the capital of the Madre de Dios Region.
Nearby are the Manú National Park, Tambopata National Reserve, and Bahuaja-Sonene National Park, which have been established to protect natural resources. These are some of the most pristine primary rain forests in the world. They include several oxbow lakes and clay licks, where hundreds of birds, including macaws, feed on clay.


Tambopata-Candamo is a nature reserve in southern Peru the Amazon basin the Madre de Dios River in the Province of Tambopata Inambari and Tambopata districts.

The reserve is located in all regions of Madre de Dios and Puno:
Tambopata is 40% of the reserve in the Madre de Dios Region.
Carabaya and Sandia are 60% of the reserve in the department of Puno.

It was created on January 26, 1990, to protect forests adjacent to Heath and Tambopata river have two important ecosystems and are characterized by their biodiversity, representing the flora and fauna with 165 species and 41 families of trees, 103 species of mammals, 1300 species of butterflies and 90 species of amphibians.


There is a tribe called "Huarayos' the 'Esse'eja' or living in the reserve, next to the Quechua and Aymara. They have activities such as agriculture (coffee), hunting, fishing and food.
The limited presence of human beings have done a wonderful conservation of different ecosystems. There are so many species that surprise any scientific :. 1,234 different types of butterflies, 592 bird, amphibian 127, 103 of mammals, reptiles 74 and a lot of varieties.

The Tambopata River is one of the unique habitat of birds and mammals. The flora of the national reserve is fairly typical of the Basin Southwest Amazon. The Heath River and surrounding territory are a unique ecosystem in Peru. The plains are periodically flooded, and small groves of trees with varied vegetation grow in isolated groups in the plain.
The protected area is home to a wide variety of plants, including exploited forest species such as cedar, mahogany, screw, Brazil nut, palm trees as pona, aguaje, ungurahui Huasai.

The Q’ollpa
The "Q’ollpa" is a Quechua name places where many species of animals congregate to eat soil minerals. Scientists believe that this behavior supplementing the diet of these animals. However, others believe that ingesting soil reduces the toxic effects of some wild fruits and seeds.

The spectacular clay lick Tambopata l High River is famous to the Tambopata National Reserve. Hundreds of individuals of various species of parrots and macaws gather in this place. There are also smaller macaw clay lick in the Heath River

Some common species seen in these places are blue green and gold macaw, scarlet, red and blue head parrots and parakeets. Monkeys, tapirs, deer and capybaras are also frequently seen,

The Chuncho collpa is a low cliff located along a tributary of the Tambopata, 5 hours upriver from Puerto Maldonado (40 minutes Wasai Lodge).

Colorado clay lick is an hour upstream from the Chuncho collpa, is a cliff higher altitude.

Day 1: Boat Trip from Puerto Maldonado to Tambopata Lodge.
Reception at the airport of Puerto Maldonado and transportation to the Maldonado Ecolodge, where you will receive a welcoming tropical fruit beverage. You will travel for 3 to 4 hours in motorboat trip up the Tambopata river to Tambopata Lodge (box lunch on board). During the trip into the heart of the rainforest we will be able to observe clouds of butterflies, birds of the tropical rainforest passing above the boat, caymans, capybaras and many other species of the local wildlife. We will also pass by typical amazon communities. Reception and accommodation at Wasai Tambopata lodge.
Introductory walk to understand rainforest ecosystems and see some of the amazing trees. Return to the lodge for dinner.
We will enjoy diverse sounds of the jungle which will accompany our first night in the amazon. Sleep at Tambopata Lodge. (L, D).

Day 2: Boat trip to the Upper Tambopata River & Macaws.
Early wake up at 4:30 am to take a light breakfast (coffee or mate), to begin with our 40-minute travel upstream to the Macaw Clay Lick “El Chuncho” in the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park.We will have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful natural sceneries and wildlife of the riverbanks. At our arrival, if weather permits, we will observe one of the greatest wildlife spectacles where hundreds of parrots and different species of macaws gather to eat clay, an unforgettable experience that makes this one of the greatest tours in the amazon. Then, we will walk through the river beach searching for animal footprints while we have refreshment.
In the middle morning we return to the lodge to have breakfast and then take a rest to relax or do the adventure activities or enjoy the facilities and the surroundings of Wasai. Also, you will have the chance of swimming in the Tambopata River. Those who wish can do kayaking on the river or you can join us to fish in the river where inhabit more than 250 species of fish.On route if the level of river are adecuated,we will visit the Cat cascades.

After lunch, we will have an ethno botanical walk into the rainforest by the Tambopata cross path, to learn about plants and medicinal trees of the area; and to observe the amazing jungle ecosystem where we will see walking palm trees, giant lupuna trees, snake trees and so on. At nightfall, we embark again to make a nocturnal caiman search.

Day 3: Back to Puerto Maldonado.
Enjoy the sunrise from your terrace, walk around the lodge before breakfast.
After breakfast we will return by boat to Puerto Maldonado to take our flight to Lima or Cuzco. (B)
